ANTI - line up of 1983. In my opinion, a lot of people don't realize I created Anti with Gary Kail in late 1979 I had picked the name ANTI for our band. I had only been playing an instrument for a year and was already writing songs with Gary for a debut ANTI album and me at 14 or 15 my voice hadn't developed yet so we recruited Steve Estabon Acusta, aka Boardin Cuban who worked with us for about a year writing and recording demos, soon after that he joined the Air Force. Bert at the time a non-musician was discovered by Gary and we recruited him to be a singer until my voice devolved enough then we shared lead vocals when he began to play 2nd guitar in the band. Bert was the face of the band and did a good job for short while when we began, he had great charisma but the heart soul and mind of ANTI has always been Gary, and myself. Me and Gary had done everything too, writing most of the songs, setting up shows, advertising, making flyers, taking demos to radio stations, having meetings with distribution companies, pressing plants, and booking promoters, while most of the other members would be at the beach or at home half the time they wouldn’t show up to gigs or rehearsals and photo shoots, there where a lot of Anti gigs where we had to go on as a 3 piece and I had to lead sing the whole show. After a while, I was the only singer for ANTI. They would reappear when they caught wind we were doing the 2nd Album "Defy the System", originally I was going to be lead singer on the entire record since Bert wasn't around and didn't show any interest in the band, then he heard we were geared up for a 2nd LP, Burt appears and swears he was going to be dedicated, and right after the album was released he disappears. Gary and myself, we were always out networking. I don't remember them ever doing a single thing for the band, I don't think they've ever set up not one show for the band. I then shared lead vocals on two of the 3 Anti LPs that Gary and I released on our own indie label New Underground records that is going to be relaunched in the near future. I was the best guitarist in Anti but stuck on the bass because no one would play bass. Since 1983 I have been the guitar player and the lead singer. Gretsch, Fender, and Gibson are my favorites. ANTI is an American DIY hardcore political punk rock band from the early South Bay, Los Angeles punk movement in 1979. Formed by a then-teenage Danny Phillips better known by Danny Dean the guitarist, original vocalist, primary songwriter, and sole continuous member through multiple lineup changes in the band and the late Gary Kail of Zurich 1916 Creative Nihilism. Predominantly known by their peers and fans for self-producing several of the most collected vinyl compilations and the start-up of one of the first DIY South Bay punk labels New Underground Records.
